Activity Overview
- The Kecak dance was created in the 1930s through the collaboration of a Balinese artist, Wayan Limbak, and a German painter, Walter Spies. This iconic Balinese dance was inspired by the sacred Sanghyang dance, which is traditionally performed in Hindu temples to ward off misfortune and disease. Originally, the Kecak dance was performed exclusively by men aged 50 and above.
- The name “Kecak” comes from the rhythmic chant “cak… cak… cak…” that forms the distinctive vocal accompaniment throughout the performance. In the past, Kecak was only performed in specific areas, such as Bona Village in Gianyar Regency. Over time, the dance spread across the island and became widely performed, especially during special occasions to welcome guests. Today, Kecak dance dramas can be found throughout Bali, particularly in culture-based tourist destinations.
