Activity Overview
🦁 Bali Zoo – Wild Adventure in Tropical Bali
Welcome to the ultimate guide for one of the most enchanting wildlife destinations in Indonesia. If you are planning your island itinerary, a visit to Bali Zoo is likely high on your list—and for good reason.
This isn't just a place to see animals; it’s a meticulously designed sanctuary that emphasizes conservation, education, and immersive experiences. At SatuSatu, we want to ensure your journey is as seamless as the Balinese breeze. Below is everything you need to know about visiting Bali Zoo Bali, from the famous "Breakfast with Orangutans" to practical tips for securing your Bali Zoo tickets.
Discovering the Magic of Bali Zoo
Located in the lush, green heart of Gianyar, specifically in the village of Singapadu, Bali Zoo was the first-ever boutique zoo on the island. While it has grown significantly since its inception, it has never lost that intimate, "walk through the jungle" feeling.
Unlike massive, impersonal safari parks where you view animals from the sterile distance of a bus, this park offers a more personal connection. The pathways are shaded by tropical canopy, the air is thick with the scent of frangipani, and the layout is designed to make you feel like an explorer rather than just a tourist.
Why Choose Bali Zoo?
Conservation First: They are deeply involved in the conservation of endangered species like the Sumatran Tiger and the Silvery Gibbon.
Unique Interactions: From mud baths with elephants to dining alongside primates, the interactions are world-class.
Family-Friendly: With a dedicated waterpark and petting zoo, it’s a paradise for travelers with children.
Bali Zoo Signature Experiences You Can’t Miss
When you browse for Bali Zoo tickets on SatuSatu, you’ll notice several different packages. To help you choose the right one, let’s break down the "bucket list" experiences that make this destination so special.
Breakfast with Orangutans
This is, without a doubt, the crown jewel of Bali Zoo Bali. Imagine waking up to the sounds of the jungle and sitting down for a lavish breakfast at Gayo Restaurant. As you enjoy fresh tropical fruits, pastries, and local Indonesian delicacies, a family of orangutans hangs out just a few meters away in their natural habitat.
It is a rare opportunity to observe these "men of the forest" (the literal translation of Orangutan) up close without glass barriers. It’s an ethical, supervised interaction that provides great educational value for kids and incredible photos for your memories.
Elephant Mud Fun
Bali Zoo has pioneered a more ethical approach to elephant tourism. Their "Elephant Mud Fun" program allows guests to get down and dirty—literally—with these gentle giants. You’ll help cover the elephants in mud (which protects their skin from the sun and parasites) and then join them in a pond to wash it all off. It’s an intimate, playful experience that fosters a genuine bond between humans and animals.
Night at the Zoo
When the sun goes down, a different side of the jungle wakes up. The Night at the Zoo program allows you to see nocturnal animals at their most active. The experience usually concludes with a dramatic fire dance performance and a gourmet dinner under the stars. It’s a sophisticated way to experience Bali Zoo if you prefer cooler temperatures and a bit of mystery.
A Tour of the Animal Kingdoms
The park is divided into several zones, each recreating the natural habitats of the residents. Here is what you can expect to see during your trek:
The African Savannah
Feel like you’ve been transported to the Serengeti. This expansive area is home to majestic lions, zebras, and giraffes. The enclosures are designed with "invisible" barriers, giving you a panoramic view of the animals as they roam freely.
The Sumatran Kingdom
Sumatra is home to some of the world’s most endangered species. At Bali Zoo, you can see the powerful Sumatran Tiger and the Sun Bear. The zoo plays a vital role in educating the public about the threats of deforestation and palm oil production to these magnificent creatures.
Birds and Reptiles
The aviaries are a kaleidoscope of color. From the iconic Bali Starling to the prehistoric-looking Hornbills, the bird collection is extensive. Meanwhile, the reptile section houses everything from the legendary Komodo Dragon to massive pythons and crocodiles.
Bali Zoo Location & Getting There
The zoo is located at Jl. Raya Singapadu, Sukawati, Gianyar.
From Ubud: About a 15–20 minute drive.
From Seminyak/Kuta: Approximately 45–60 minutes, depending on traffic.
From Sanur: A quick 20-minute drive.
Most visitors prefer to hire a private driver or use a ride-hailing app. If you book certain packages via SatuSatu, hotel transport may be included, which takes the stress out of navigating Balinese traffic.
Bali Zoo Opening Hours
The zoo is generally open from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM for day visitors. The Night at the Zoo program typically starts around 6:00 PM.
Best Time to Visit Bali Zoo
To beat the heat and the crowds, arrive as soon as the gates open at 9:00 AM. This is also when many animals are at their most active during morning feedings. If you are doing the Breakfast with Orangutans, you will need to arrive even earlier (usually by 8:00 AM).
Bali Zoo Facilities and Amenities
Bali Zoo is designed for comfort. You don’t need to worry about being "stuck" in the jungle without modern conveniences.
Dining: Aside from the specialty dining experiences, there are several cafes and restaurants like Wana Restaurant, which overlooks the lion enclosure.
Jungle Splash Waterplay: A highlight for families. After a few hours of walking, the kids can cool off in this waterpark featuring slides, buckets, and fountains.
Shuttle Service: The park provides internal shuttles to move between different zones, which is a lifesaver for elderly visitors or those with small children.
Souvenir Shops: High-quality merchandise, often supporting local artisans and conservation efforts.
Insider Tips for a Perfect Bali Zoo Day!
To make your experience at Bali Zoo Bali truly unforgettable, keep these tips in mind:
Dress Appropriately: Wear light, breathable clothing and comfortable walking shoes. Don’t forget a hat and plenty of sunscreen.
Stay Hydrated: It gets humid! There are plenty of stalls to buy water, but bringing a reusable bottle is better for the environment.
Animal Feedings: Check the schedule upon arrival. Watching a tiger feeding or a bird show adds a layer of depth to your visit.
Respect the Residents: Remember that these are living beings. Follow the keepers' instructions, don't use flash photography near sensitive animals, and never feed them outside of supervised encounters.
Pack a Change of Clothes: If you plan on doing the Elephant Mud Fun or letting the kids play in the Jungle Splash, a dry set of clothes and a towel are essential.
Why We Love Bali Zoo (And You Will Too)
What sets Bali Zoo apart is its commitment to the "Five Freedoms" of animal welfare. You can see it in the shine of the animals' coats and the enrichment activities provided by the dedicated keepers. It’s a place that fosters empathy. When you look into the eyes of an orangutan or feel the rough skin of an elephant, you realize why protecting our planet’s biodiversity is so critical.
By visiting, you aren't just having a fun day out; you are contributing to a system that rescues and rehabilitates wildlife across Indonesia.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) about Bali Zoo
Is Bali Zoo ethical?
Yes. Bali Zoo focuses on "edutainment" and conservation. They have moved away from traditional "performances" and toward natural behaviors and enrichment. Their Elephant Mud Fun program is a prime example of their shift toward more ethical, non-riding interactions.
How long should I spend there?
A standard visit takes about 3 to 4 hours. However, if you include a specialty breakfast, a session at the waterpark, and a long lunch, you can easily turn it into a full-day 6-hour excursion.
Can I buy tickets at the gate?
You can, but it is often more expensive and you risk certain experiences (like the Orangutan breakfast) being sold out. We highly recommend booking your Bali Zoo tickets in advance through SatuSatu to secure your spot and get the best price.
Is the zoo wheelchair and stroller accessible?
Most of the main paths are paved and accessible. However, some jungle trails might have slight inclines or roots. The park shuttle is equipped to help those with mobility issues move between major areas.

We've been to numerous zoos across southeast Asia and this was the best zoo we have ever been. We get really close to the animals and even interact with them with no glass. The facilities were also really well made and there was plenty of shade and ventilation from heat. I highly recommend this zoo.
