Prambanan Temple Yogya (Jogja) is the largest Hindu temple complex in Indonesia and one of Southeast Asia's most important cultural landmarks. It was built in the 9th century during the reign of the Sanjaya Dynasty of the ancient Mataram Kingdom in Central Java.

The temple is dedicated to the Trimurti, the three principal Hindu deities:

  • Shiva (the Destroyer)
  • Vishnu (the Preserver)
  • Brahma (the Creator)

The tallest and most prominent temple, standing about 47 meters (154 feet) high, is dedicated to Shiva.

During the 10th century, the political center of the Mataram Kingdom shifted to East Java, and Prambanan Yogya (Jogja) gradually fell into disuse. Over time, volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, and natural deterioration caused much of the complex to collapse and become buried under debris.

Prambanan was rediscovered in the early 19th century during the colonial era, and extensive restoration efforts began in the 20th century. The main temples were carefully reconstructed, preserving their original architecture and intricate stone reliefs that depict stories from the Hindu epics, including the Ramayana.

In 1991, Prambanan was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Centre World Heritage Site in recognition of its outstanding cultural and historical significance
