The zoo occupies an old limestone quarry beside Brackenridge Park, and the setting gives it a character no purpose-built site could match — pale rock walls rising behind the enclosures, mature trees closing overhead, and paths that wind between them in deep shade.
More than three thousand five hundred animals live here. African elephants and hippos are the headliners, the latter viewed through underwater glass as they move with surprising grace. Big Cat Valley holds jaguars and tigers, Africa Live! covers crocodiles, meerkats and okapi, and the bird collection is among the best in the country.
For younger visitors there is Kronkosky's Tiny Tot Nature Spot, a discovery area built at knee height, plus a carousel and the miniature train that has circled Brackenridge Park for generations — a San Antonio institution in its own right.
